Jeri Riggs

In the weeks after the 9/11 attacks, Corey Gammel and his partner Peter Marquez saw the rubble and wreckage of Ground Zero and decided to create a memorial to the victims of the attacks.  They eventually created a quilt— similar to the AIDS Quilt—with the help of volunteers across the country and the globe. The Quilt was designed to “honor the victims and comfort the world.” The Quilt is now more than 15,500 square feet and is currently on tour in the United States and will eventually find a permanent home.

Jeri Riggs was a practicing psychiatrist until she developed fibromyalgia in 1992. Faced with a “world of pain and suffering without control,” she discovered that she could relieve her pain by expressing herself through quilting.

After witnessing the attacks on 9/11, she turned her efforts to creating a memorial quilt to bring comfort to others in the same way that quilting brought to her.

More information about her quilts can be found here.
