Tommye-K. Mayer is an author and activist for people with disabilities, women, and freelance writers. She has a BA in Sociology from Wheaton College, Norton, Mass. Just one year after graduation, she found herself doing graduate work in Rehabilitation at the "School of Hard Knocks" after she survived a nearly fatal thalamic cerebral hemorrhage. Her book Teaching Me to Run is the story of how and why she taught her stroke-paralyzed body to run, culminating in completion of Boston's Tufts 10K.

Her book One-Handed in a Two-Handed World has been praised as one of the most matter-of-fact and practical guides for navigating day-to-day situations and improving personal autonomy.

In addition to her writing and speaking, Tommye-K is an advocate for the rights of freelance writers. She continues to cultivate community and coordinated advocacy among a diverse corps of creators across the country.
