His anonymous blog is credited with setting in motion the scandal that would eventually be known as “Foley-gate.” As a young Congressional staffer, he was approached by Congressman Mark Foley and gave the much older Congressman his e-mail address. Shortly thereafter, Lane began receiving lewd e-mails from Congressman Foley.
The public outcry, based on the actions of the Congressman, caused Rep. Foley to resign from office. Many pundits view Foley-gate as one key to the Democratic takeover of Congress in 2006.
